The Climate Fresk

Overview

The Climate Fresk is an interactive, collaborative workshop designed to help participants understand the complexities of climate change in just three hours. It uses a set of 42 cards based on the IPCC report, and participants work together to map out the cause-and-effect relationships between different climate phenomena. This creates a visual representation of the interconnected issues related to climate change, making it easier to grasp how various factors contribute to the global crisis. This workshop aims to promote climate education, teamwork, and concrete action plans for personal and professional changes.

Activities
  1. Card Mapping: participants work together in small groups to sort 42 cards representing various climate change phenomena and create a cause-and-effect diagram that illustrates how these phenomena are interconnected.
  2. Team Collaboration: groups collaborate to arrange the cards, discuss the relationships between different factors, and build a comprehensive understanding of climate change's systemic nature.
  3. Creativity: participants decorate and personalize their "fresk" to make it visually engaging and memorable.
  4. Debriefing and Discussion: a significant portion of the workshop is dedicated to reflective discussion. Participants analyze what they’ve learned, share their insights, and engage in dialogue about the implications of climate change on society
  5. Action Planning: in the final phase, participants brainstorm solutions to climate-related problems and discuss how they can implement changes in their personal and professional lives.
Topics Addressed
  1. Climate change and its impacts
  2. Greenhouse gas emissions
  3. Human activity and its impacts (e.g. deforestation, pollution)
  4. Social and economic implications of climate change
  5. Greenhouse gas emissions
  6. Environmental consequences (e.g. forest fires, floods, species extinction)
  7. Climate feedback loops
  8. Mitigation strategies
  9. Adaptation measures
  10. Individual and collective action
  11. Policy and global action
Learning Outcomes

The Climate Fresk equips participants with a deeper understanding of the complex causes and effects of climate change. By visually mapping the interconnections between human activities and environmental outcomes, participants learn to identify the major drivers of climate change and the consequences they trigger. The workshop fosters critical thinking and encourages collaborative problem-solving. Participants leave with a clearer perspective on how climate systems work, the urgent need for action, and concrete steps they can take to mitigate climate impacts in both their personal and professional lives.
